As an introductory project to Sonic art, students created their own sound works relating to a specific location or object on campus. Each piece was composed using a combination of field recordings captured by the students and sounds generated with music production software introduced during the course. The project drew on sound art theories and practices, including the use of environmental soundscapes and manipulation techniques, and was influenced by the artists discussed in class including Luc Ferrari and Pauline Oliveros.
Ferrari’s emphasis on storytelling through sound informed the compositional approach, encouraging students to experiment with narrative arcs within their recordings. Oliveros’ principles of deep listening encouraged a heightened awareness of their sonic environments.
The completed tracks were compiled into a collective album, showcasing each student’s unique perspective. The album was made accessible via a class-built website, developed using basic CSS coding skills. This project not only enhanced students’ technical skills in sound production but also deepened their understanding of the creative and theoretical frameworks that shape sonic art.
