Giants' Department Store: The Everday
Foundations II: Drawing Permutations
Foundations II: Drawing Permutations
In collaboration with Zihao Chen
This project invited foundation students to work collaboratively in sculptural dimensions, installation, and material innovation as they brought the concept of a “Giants’ Department Store” to life. Inspired by Claes Oldenburg’s soft sculptures and Robert Gober’s material mimicry, student teams, each consisting of 2-4 members, were responsible for designing and creating a department store display scaled up. The challenge lies not only in the creative execution but also in the unique material constraints—everything must be made entirely from paper materials, pushing students to innovate within these boundaries.
It was up to the student teams to reimagine everyday products which could range from clothing, furniture, and food to cosmetics, toys, and beyond. Teams were encouraged to consider product design, functionality, and presentation. Students learned about the complexities of scale, display, and collaborative problem-solving and the discussed the relationship between art, function, and the uncanny.
