The Voice
Communication, Performance, Abstraction
Advanced Video and Sonic Arts

This project challenges students to create a work that places the voice or vocality at its core. Drawing inspiration from a broad range of practices—such as Meredith Monk's vocal performances and Marlon Riggs’ experimental documentaries—the project invites students to explore the voice both as a linguistic tool for communication and as an instrument of sound.

Students are encouraged to experiment with various mediums and formats, such as live monologues, radio dramas, sound installations, or poetry-based works. In all cases, the voice—whether recorded or performed—should be a central element, shaping both the material and conceptual aspects of the piece. This project offers students the opportunity to investigate the multifaceted nature of the voice, from its ability to convey emotion and meaning to its potential for abstraction and musicality.

Throughout the project, students explore the intersection of sound, performance, and media, drawing from examples of artists discussed in class, including Laurie Anderson and Mark Leckey. They will critically examine how the voice functions as both a vehicle for language and a sonic instrument, contemplating its role in the narrative and aesthetic dimensions of their work. Alongside this, students develop technical skills in recording, editing, and integrating vocal components into various media formats, utilizing tools like audio software and video editing platforms.
